Can cancer patients receive massage? The answer is YES!
Contrary to popular belief massage does not spread cancer or flush medication from the body. Research* has shown that patients who have had massage for cancer have seen huge benefits including:
- The improvement of body image after a mastectomy
- The reduction of pain intensity
- A feeling of relaxation
- Reduction in anxiety
- And an improvement in wellbeing and quality of life.
The Therapist will need to take into consideration several factors when treating:
There must be consent from your Doctor or Consultant before treatment can commence
- Active cancer sites or recent surgery sites cannot be worked on
- If lymphoedema is present, pressure must be very gentle to avoid tissue damage. Lymphatic drainage is the most appropriate treatment for this condition.
- Generally, techniques, pressure and duration of the treatment will need to be tailor made to suit each patient.
