Physiotherapy for Male Incontinence

Regain Confidence and Control with Expert Pelvic Health Support

Urinary incontinence affects thousands of men in the UK, yet it remains under-discussed and often misunderstood. At our clinic, we offer specialised physiotherapy treatments designed to help men manage and overcome incontinence, restoring quality of life and confidence.

What Is Male Incontinence?

Male incontinence refers to the involuntary leakage of urine. It can occur due to a variety of reasons including:

• Prostate surgery (e.g. post-prostatectomy)

• Pelvic floor weakness

• Neurological conditions

• Bladder dysfunction

• Age-related changes

There are different types of incontinence, such as stress incontinence (leakage during exertion), urge incontinence (sudden, intense urge to urinate), Post Prostatectomy Incontinence (PPI) and mixed incontinence.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

Physiotherapy is a first-line, evidence-based treatment for male incontinence. According to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and NICE guidelines, pelvic health physiotherapy can significantly improve symptoms and reduce reliance on medication or surgery.

Our Approach Includes:

Pelvic Floor Muscle Training

Targeted exercises to strengthen the muscles that support bladder control. These exercises are simple, discreet, and can be done anywhere.

Bladder Retraining

Techniques to improve bladder capacity and reduce urgency.

Lifestyle & Behavioural Advice

Guidance on fluid intake, diet, and habits that may affect bladder health.

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)

In some cases, we may use NMES to stimulate pelvic floor muscles and nerves, as recommended by NICE for adult urinary incontinence.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your first appointment will include a confidential assessment by a specialist pelvic health physiotherapist. Anna will listen closely to the problems you are experiencing and take a detailed history asking questions which are essential to determine the type of incontinence you have which will inform the best strategies to include to get you dry! There will be a discussion around medication and any surgery you may have had. It is important that your concerns, expectations, and goals are heard. Lifestyle choices are important too so don’t be worried if asked about diet, exercise, eating and drinking – we are not judging.

There will be an examination which will look at you generally – breathing patterns and areas of tension, as well as examination of genital area and penis.

Based on this assessment, Anna will work with you to create a personalised treatment plan that may include:

• Education and self-management strategies

• A tailored exercise programme

• Progress tracking and ongoing support

• Signposting to further services or investigations
