Why Choose Neurological Physiotherapy
Each of these conditions varies significantly from each other but also varies greatly from individual to individual. Your neurological physiotherapist will work with you to form a program tailored to meet your individual needs. This will include:
Rehabilitation
Activities and exercises that help you achieve a specific goal to improve your health and wellbeing. The difficulty of this goal can vary from small changes like being able to get out of bed independently, or being able to put on your own socks, to much larger targets like getting on and off the floor or walking 10 miles. Sometimes when goals are very big you will need to set yourself smaller more achievable goals to get towards a bigger goal. Your neurological physiotherapist will help you identify appropriate steps towards these achievements, motivate you and assess your improvement.
Condition management
some neurological conditions can get worse with time; some improve and some flare up episodically. It is useful to have tools available to slow the progression and to keep you going. These tools can come in many forms including:
- Advice on activity and pacing
- Exercises
- Manual therapy
- Massage
- Position advice
- Pain management
- Tonal management
- Sleep hygiene
- Stress management and relaxation
- Electrotherapy – eg TENS, microcurrent, ultrasound and shock wave therapy
How to manage a flare up
There are lots of neurological conditions present episodically, with a flare up of symptoms such as relapsing and remitting MS and migraine. Your neurological Physiotherapist can help you collect data to identify triggers, avoid triggers if you are able, intervene early and provide you with options to navigate a flare up of symptoms and return to normal function as soon as possible.
It is also possible for an individual with a neurological condition to have a musculoskeletal injury or dysfunction. Sometimes we forget you can have more than one thing going on! A clinician that understands how your neurological condition affects how you respond to treatment can have a significant impact on a desirable outcome.
