Understanding Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD)
Whiplash occurs when the head is jerked forward and backward with great force, common in motor vehicle accidents. This causes “micro-trauma” to the small muscles and ligaments of the neck.
Common Symptoms
- Reduced range of motion (difficulty looking over your shoulder).
- Neck pain and stiffness that may appear 24–48 hours later.
- Dizziness and “heavy-headedness.”
The Ashbourne Approach
Early movement is vital. We use gentle manual therapy to reduce muscle guarding and provide reassuring education to lower the “threat” level in the nervous system. We focus on deep neck flexor strengthening to stabilise the spine and resolve associated headaches.
