Understanding Disc Injuries
Discs don’t actually “slip”—they are firmly attached to the vertebrae. However, the soft jelly-like centre can bulge out (prolapse) and press on a nearby nerve. The good news is that most disc bulges naturally resorb over time with the right care.
Common Symptoms
- Severe back pain combined with leg symptoms (sciatica).
- Pain that is worse when bending forward or sitting.
- Loss of strength in specific leg muscles.
The Ashbourne Approach
We help manage the inflammatory phase with advice on movement and posture. As the pain settles, we move into a “stabilisation” phase, using Pilates-based exercises to strengthen the deep abdominal and spinal muscles, providing a “natural corset” that protects the disc as it heals.
