Understanding the Sciatic Nerve
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated as it leaves the spine. This is often caused by a disc bulge or “wear and tear” changes in the lower back.
Common Symptoms
- Sharp, electric-shock-like pain down the back of the leg.
- Pain that travels past the knee into the calf or foot.
- Increased pain when coughing, sneezing, or sitting.
The Ashbourne Approach
We focus on “decompressing” the nerve. We use manual therapy to loosen the surrounding muscles and “nerve glides”—specific movements that help the nerve slide smoothly through its path. We also provide advice on positions of comfort to help you sleep and move during the acute phase.
