Understanding the SI Joint
The SI joints connect your spine to your pelvis. During pregnancy, hormonal changes (Relaxin) make the ligaments around these joints looser, which can lead to pain as the joints move too much or become “stuck” unevenly.
Common Symptoms
- Pain deep in the buttock, often on one side.
- Difficulty getting in and out of the car or turning in bed.
- Pain when walking or standing on one leg.
The Ashbourne Approach
We focus on “re-stabilising” the pelvis. We use manual therapy to correct any minor misalignments and provide a core-strengthening programme that focuses on the “deep” stabilisers of the pelvis. We also advise on the use of SIJ support belts and sleeping positions to reduce the strain on the joints.
