Understanding Thoracic & Rib Mechanics
Rib pain can be caused by “Intercostal” muscle strains or stiffness in the joints where the ribs meet the spine (costovertebral joints). It often feels like a “stitch” or a sharp catch when taking a deep breath.
Common Symptoms
- Pain when coughing, sneezing, or deep breathing.
- Tenderness between the ribs.
- Difficulty twisting the torso.
The Ashbourne Approach
After ruling out medical causes, we focus on the “mechanics” of the rib cage. We use specialised joint mobilisations to ensure each rib can glide freely during the breathing cycle and provide postural exercises to prevent the “slumped” positions that often irritate these joints.
