Understanding Knee Ligaments
The knee relies on four major ligaments (ACL, PCL, MCL, and LCL) for stability. A strain occurs when these tissues are stretched or torn, usually due to a sudden twist, a fall, or a direct impact during sports.
Common Symptoms
- A “pop” sound at the time of injury.
- Immediate swelling and bruising.
- A feeling that the knee might “give way” or buckle.
The Ashbourne Approach
We assess the degree of the strain to determine if it requires conservative management or a surgical referral. Treatment focuses on reducing swelling through manual lymphatic drainage and compression, followed by intense proprioception (balance) training. We teach your brain and muscles to stabilise the knee, replacing the function of the injured ligament.
