Headaches Arising From Neck Problems

Understanding Cervicogenic Headaches

Many chronic headaches are actually caused by issues in the upper three joints of the neck. The nerves from these joints share a pathway with the nerves for the head and face, causing the brain to “misinterpret” neck stiffness as a headache.

Common Symptoms

  • Pain that starts at the base of the skull and moves over the top of the head.
  • Headaches that are triggered by certain neck movements or postures.
  • Pain that is usually on one side of the head.

The Ashbourne Approach

We are experts in the “Maitland” and “Mulligan” techniques of joint mobilisation. By gently “niggling” the stiff joints in the upper neck, we can often switch off a headache instantly. We then teach you how to maintain this mobility through specialised stretches and postural awareness.
