Frozen Shoulder (Shoulder capsulitis)

Frozen Shoulder 1

Understanding the Stages of Frozen Shoulder

This is a condition where the flexible capsule around the shoulder joint becomes thick, stiff, and inflamed. It usually progresses through three stages: Freezing (painful), Frozen (stiff), and Thawing (improving).

Common Symptoms

  • Inability to reach behind your back or put on a coat.
  • Severe “toothache” like pain, especially at night.
  • Total loss of both active and passive movement.

The Ashbourne Approach

We provide a clear map for your recovery. In the painful “Freezing” stage, we focus on pain relief and gentle movement. As it enters the “Thawing” stage, we use intensive joint mobilisations to “stretch” the capsule and regain your range of motion. We can also advise on when a steroid injection might be beneficial to speed up the process.
